About the Artist

Dance was born in London; working as an artist and in later life was a politician. Although he aimed to become a history painter, it was as a portrait artist he was most successful. He travelled to Italy to develop his skill, whilst in Rome in the 1760s he had a love affair with fellow painter Angelica Kauffman, which ended on their return to Britain. When he returned to Britain he received his most prestigious commission- a portrait of Edward Duke of York on behalf of King George III. Dance went on to be a founding member of the Royal Academy of Art and was elected MP for East Grinstead in 1790.
