More information

Bulk cargoes of gold were brought in on the Packet ships and carried to London in these large wagons by Russell and Company, escorted by soldiers. Because of the weight such a journey could take up to three weeks in bad weather. Russell's headquarters stood at the bottom of Jacob's ladder (now the location of Lloyd's Bank).
