More information about the frame

The use of a Neoclassical style in this context works extremely well, setting this sea battle against that of Luny?s Admiral Rodney?s victory off Cape St Vincent in its more Baroque entablature frame. The latter, with its rolling waters and clouds, dramatic anticipation and terracotta tones, is set in a frame with sculptural profile and warm colouring, whilst the present painting, with its monochrome palette and swirling, rapid action, finds a perfect foil in the flat architrave profile and cooler gilding in the Neoclassical style.
