Tuke, Henry Scott, RA RWS (1858-1929): The Message, signed and dated 1890, inscribed signed twice and dated 1890, oil on canvas, 100 x 89.5 cms. Presented to the Corporation of Falmouth by Alfred A. De Pass, in memory of his sons.

More information about the frame

The ?Watts? frame was named after the artist George Frederic Watts, RA (1817?1904), who used it almost exclusively for his work over a period of about half a century. For more information on the Watts frame see entry for Charles Napier Hemy.

This particular frame is a variant of the Watts frame: in its acanthus leaf ornament (which is usually applied to the convex top edge of the frame, rather than in a hollow beneath a convex moulding); in the run of spindle-&- bead, which is usually placed against the bottom edge of the acanthus ornament; and in its mitred, rather than butt-jointed, frieze.
