Picturesque Views in England and Wales
1825-1838

Despite sharing the identical title with that of the same subject already printed in his ?Southern Coast? series Turner included some modifications in this second version. Rather than farther along the beach here we see the centre of town with a similar ?two-master? just offshore unloading its catch. What looks like the entire inhabitants of this thriving fishing village have gathered to assist in its ?processing?. This would have been standard practice all around Cornwall in the days before electrified refridgeration. Apart from pilchards a large skate is displayed between two figures in the right foreground.

The original for this work is located in the British Museum, London
