Picturesque Views in England and Wales 1825-1838

Of the ninety-six reproductions engraved from the hundred watercolour drawings made for the England and Wales series, this represents the scene of most bucolic repose. Overlooking St Antony?s Passage, a now silted tributary of the river Lynher, the conical bastion of Trematon sits atop its defunct feudal barony. Under tall trees at the river?s head a young woman rests with her two donkeys. Away to the right a shepherd slowly leads a flock of sheep southwards between wooded slopes alongside the tranquil water?s edge.
Turner?s love of visual puns can be seen in the shape of the girl?s hat which duplicates an inverted outline of the castle.
