More information about the frame

Another frame style popular with the twentieth-century avant garde, similar painted profiles are found on work by German and Scandinavian artists from the 1920s, and were taken up and used by many later painters. They have also been applied by dealers to works by Picasso and others.

The design is contemporary with the date of Jameson?s portrait, and provides an expansive margin which cradles the image, the gentle concave section providing a variation of light and colour which complements the atmospheric background of the work. The colours chosen would also have complemented a contemporary interior.
