Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England
1814-1826

Turner was attracted to this view making it the subject of another watercolour included in his later series ?Picturesque Views in England and Wales?. Over Carrick Roads with its full-sailed shipping, can be seen Pendennis Castle whose circular bastion and lookout tower duplicates that of St Mawes in the centre. The foreground is filled with figures hauling their nets ashore from the fishing smack on the left. Their catch of pilchards then being disgorged onto the beach in readiness for shovelling into baskets for immediate sale. Turner?s depiction accurately captures this hustle and bustle as the sun?s rising temperature gradually evaporates the early morning haze.
