About this work

Berlin, Sven (1911-1999): Vera Ikonica, signed and dated 1955, inscribed Vera Ikonica, oil on board, 26 x 21 cms. Presented by Dr Peter J. Jackson.

More information about the frame

The painting was given to Dr Jackson unframed, because at that stage Sven Berlin did not have much money. Dr Jackson (also an artist) ran The Art Shop, Northall Road, Southampton, where Sven Berlin would buy artists? materials and, when he could afford it, frames.

During his St Ives period he often used traditional mouldings painted white, but later he would sometimes buy cheap second-hand frames and paint works to fit.

This frame was selected by Paul Mitchell for its contemporary style, and for the recessive effect, generated by the three wide steps, which leads the eye into the painting. The worn, ebonised finish tones with the painted image, and reinforces its timeless qualities.
