Webster, Mark (born 1955): Conger eel, Porthcurno, Cornwall, photograph, 31 x 46 cms. Presented by the artist as part of the Heritage Lottery Fund's Darwin 200 celebrations.

More information

Conger eels are found on shallow and deep reefs, and particularly on wrecks where there are plenty of holes for them to hide. Although they have a fearsome reputation with fishermen, they are mostly docile and inquisitive when found underwater.
