Many cigarette ends stamped out in gutters get washed out to sea by the drainage system. 1.9 million cigarette ends were recorded in a survey in 2006 from beaches around the world (Ocean Conservancy, 2007). Each cigarette end contains many toxins that leach into the ocean water and into the stomachs of marine life.
