Known as Willie, she was born in St Andrews, Fife. She was the eldest child of Allan Barns-Graham and Wilhelmina Meldrum; an old landed family in Stirlingshire and Fife.

She was one of the foremost painters working in St Ives, having moved there in 1940. Her painting, along with her contemporaries at the St Ives School, contributed greatly in the development of Modernist British painting in the mid to late 20th century.

Since 1960 she divided her time between her homes in St Ives and St Andrews, affirming herself as much a Scottish as Cornish artist. Barns-Graham was dedicated to her art, still working daily till the very end.
