Ian Chipman trained and taught at Guildford School of Art, which later became the Farnham College of Art and the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College. He worked in the pioneering photography department set up by Ifor Thomas. Among his students were John Hedgecoe and Jane Bown.

He retired with his wife, Clare, to Cornwall, where he lived at Devoran.
