John Dyer is one of Cornwall's best loved artists. He lives in Falmouth with his wife, the artist Jo Short, and they are regular exhibitors at the gallery. In 1986 he attended Falmouth School of Art (now University College Falmouth) for his foundation year before studying at Middlesex Polytechnic. He began his career as a photographer, publishing photographs with Athena.

In 1989 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and travelled to the Amazon rainforest. John was amazed by the colour and variety of the plant life he saw in the rainforest, and became dissatisfied with photography as a medium for capturing the richness he saw. On his return he took up painting and never looked back.

There is an innocence and freshness to John Dyer's art which follows tradition in Cornwall that includes the work of Alfred Wallis, Christopher Wood, Ben Nicholson, Tom Early, Fred Yates, Bryan Pearce, Joan Gilchrest, Julian Dyson, Julian Christophers, Linda Weir and Simeon Stafford.
