The St Mawes artist, Julian Dyson, was a much loved and respected artist in Cornwall and a regular visitor to Falmouth Art Gallery. His early work was influenced by Van Gogh, Francis Bacon and Pablo Picasso before developing his own unique and highly original style. In March 2000 he was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer. On coming home from hearing the diagnosis he immediately produced a self portrait, to capture how he felt. He also produced a ceramic portrait of Steve. another patient with terminal cancer, with whom he had great empathy. Julian wanted both portraits to capture the feel of rabbits frozen in the headlights.
