Brought up in Wolverhampton, Gaskin?s family moved to Birmingham in 1879, where he attended the School of Art from 1883.Within 2 years he was appointed Assistant Master. Here he met his future wife Georgie Evelyn Cave France. His early paintings show the influence of the Newlyn Society of Artists; but in the 1890s he encountered William Morris and Burnes-Jones, encouraging him to adopt a more linear Arts and Crafts style. He was a close friend of Joseph Southall, probably taking informal lessons from him on tempera paintings. While working at the Birmingham School of art he developed an interest in in crafts, especially metalwork, he was promoted to Head of Mastership of the School of Jewellery and Silversmithing in 1903.
