Fay Godwin taught herself photography by taking pictures of her children. She became a professional photographer after a career in publishing. Her interest in landscape increased when the poet Ted Hughes suggested that he would write poems to accompany her photographs, a work that produced Remains of Elmet (1979).
Her moody monochrome work featuring the British landscape established her as a major photographer. She was president of the Ramblers Association and an archive of her work is at the British Library.
