Henry Scott Tuke stands amongst the international giants of late Victorian art. He was part of the Newlyn School, a British Impressionist and a key figure in the rich artistic heritage of Falmouth. He was brought up in Falmouth and studied at the Slade in 1875. He also visited the studio of Bastien-Lepage and greatly admired the freshness of his plein air painting. In 1885 he returned to live in Falmouth, where he was based for the rest of his life.
Tuke is now chiefly remembered for his wonderful portrayal of sunlight on flesh, but he was also an accomplished painter of portraits, landscapes and marine paintings.
