John Ward was born in Hereford. He studied at the Royal College of Arts before enlisting with the Royal Engineers in 1939.

After the war he worked as an illustrator, producing drawings for Vogue from 1948. He provided illustrations for H.E.Bates, Joyce Grenfell, and for the original version of Cider with Rose by Laurie Lee.

He soon established a reputation as a portraitist, and became a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1954. Two years later he was elected to the Royal Academy, but resigned in 1997. He taught Prince Charles watercolour painting.
