Maritime Art
The Fal area has been, and continues to be, strong in maritime art. Falmouth’s first Royal Academician was Charles Napier Hemy, the leading maritime artist of his generation, who settled in Falmouth in 1881, where he produced his best works.
He bought an old seine boat, the Vandervelde, which he converted into a floating studio and which was later replaced by the Vandermeer. His paintings often featured the coastline around Falmouth and he also became known for his depictions of yacht racing. He was a friend and influence on the younger Henry Scott Tuke.
Other major maritime artists in the collection include William Ayerst Ingram, Thomas Luny, Charles Pears, Thomas Buttersworth and more recently Michael Bickford.
Maritime archives are housed in the Bartlett Library at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.
