British Surrealists

15 Sep 2012 - 17 Nov 2012

The infamous International Surrealist Exhibition of 1936 attracted over a thousand visitors per day and is widely viewed as the dawn of British Surrealism - a movement that continues to influence and inspire British artists to this day.

This exhibition is drawn from the collection of Southampton City Art Gallery and shows how a range of artists have responded to Surrealist ideas on dreams and the unconscious.

Included will be works by Eileen Agar, Cecil Collins, Ithel Colquhoun, Tristram Hillier, Humphrey Jennings, Desmond Morris, Paul Nash, Roland Penrose, Ceri Richards, Edith Rimmington and John Tunnard.
