In his seventies, Henri Matisse, whilst bedridden, perfected his cut-out technique which hailed a renaissance in his creative activity.

He assembled compositions by cutting out shapes in brilliantly coloured paper, pre-painted in gouache to his specification, and pinning them to the walls of his studio.

Matisse would spend months surrounded by his configurations, subtly changing and re-arranging each one until he was satisfied. He commented: “Scissors can acquire more feeling for line than pencil or charcoal”.

The result was one of the most innovative of his works, the Jazz series. Local children’s work will be hung alongside the work of the great master.
