Born in Exeter, Devon, in 1937, he went on to study at Bromley College of Art before and after completing his National Service in the 1950s

He was initially influenced by Frank Auerbach, whose studio he worked in while completing his postgraduate studies at Slade in London.

He went on to teach at Bournemouth College of Art, Reading University?s department of Fine Art as well as Epsom School of Art.

Atkins first came to Cornwall in 1974 to teach at Falmouth College of Art (now University College Falmouth). While here he continued to exhibit at various venues including the Piers Morris Gallery and Newlyn Art Gallery. He was also elected as a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. He now lives in France.
