More information about the frame

This is a classical cassetta frame, one of the simplest and most versatile of profiles, which functions like a door into the landscape, the lines of the rails and their mitres exerting a pull inwards on the spectator. The rails, gilded over a dark bole, along with the black frieze, echo the darkly-shadowed trees and the subtle golden-brown highlights of the painting. Contrast this with the bolder, more sculptural black and gold frames with their Baroque silhouettes which provide such a strong foil for Kenneth Newton?s paintings.
