Brangwyn studied as an apprentice to William Morris, and was a friend and admirer of the Falmouth marine artist Charles Napier Hemy RA. Brangwyn was also a mentor to Bernard Leach, teaching him etching and advising him to travel to Japan.

Brangwyn was knighted for his art in 1941, and was one of the first Royal Academicians to be honoured with an exhibition in his own lifetime. A museum devoted to his work was opened in his home town of Bruges.
