William Martin attended Redruth Art School and studied under A,S,Hambley and at Falmouth Art School under D.Seward. William exhibited at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, receiving the bronze medal in 1926. He lived at various addresses including Pink Moors, St Day; 4 Restromel Terrace, Falmouth and later Western Terrace Falmouth. His drawings record many buildings in the area which were later destroyed in the war. During the war he was based at Swindon for a period. He also exhibited through the Worker's Education Association and the Truro District Art Society. In the early 1970s he was elected a Cornish Bard for his services to art and was given the name 'Carer Gwyth' - 'Lover of Trees'.
