Osborn(e), William Evelyn (1868-1906): Hayle Flats, signed, signed 'W.Osborne' and inscribed 'To A.M.T.', oil on canvas, 51 x 61 cms. Presented to the Corporation of Falmouth in 1923 by Alfred A. de Pass, in memory of his sons.

More information about the frame

This is one of a pair of frames selected for the two Osborn paintings in Falmouth?s collection. With their Baroque sculptural profile and warm colouring they are perfect counterparts for the cool, impressionistic scenes of water and clear light-filled skies. The ?Salvator Rosa? in its original form was used as much for landscapes as for portraits; its very name derives from its association with pictures by Rosa, the turbulent, mountainous landscapes he painted, filled with torrents, banditti and wolves, finding their ideal foil in the unornamented architectural solidity of this profile.
