This photograph was taken in Paris when Andrew Lanyon and Antony Penrose visited Man Ray in his studio. It was Antony's suggestion to put the chess board in the background to cover the clutter of the studio. Man Ray wrote to Andrew saying it was his favourite portrait of himself.
