More information about the frame

During the 1980s and 1990s Kurt experimented with a wide range of frames, including hand-painting his own. He eventually settled on the simple white box frame that has gained popularity with many St Ives abstract painters. This was a period that he particularly admires. He likes frames that aren?t overly flamboyant and don?t distract from the painting. It is important to Kurt that the edge of the canvas is revealed rather than being hidden by a rebate.

His frames are made by Darren Bickford and Paul Trembath, two ex-miners who live close to his studio. Kurt insists that all his frames are made of wood from a renewable source that is non-rainforest. He often uses reclaimed wood.

In general he uses a square format. Works on paper are always imperial sizes. Works on canvas are either 3 x 3ft, 4 x 4ft, 5 x 5ft or 6 x 6ft. Above 6 ft his works go rectangular ranging from 7 x 8ft to 7 x 12 ft. In general he doesn?t go much bigger than this as he can?t get a lorry up the lane to his studio!
