Blake was a painter of urban realist scenes and was a pioneer of Pop Art. He was born in Dartford, Kent, and studied at Gravesend Art School 1948-51. Having served in the RAF 1951-53, he continued his studies at the Royal College of Art 1953-56. He won the Leverhulme Research Award, allowing him to study popular art in Holland, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain 1956-57.

Blake was heavily influenced by American realist painters and first exhibited at the Royal Academy 1954-55. He held his first one man-show at the Portal Gallery in 1962. He is also well known for his design of several notable album sleeves including The Beatles? ?Sargent Pepper?s Lonely Hearts Club band?, Band Aid?s ?Do they know it?s Christmas? (1984) and Paul Weller?s ?Stanley Road?.
